Makes a Scene Look Exactly Like What the Eye Sees

When you take a photograph from a digital camera of, say a beautiful pastoral scene, and straightaway view it on the computer, or in print, what you see would be a subdued image of the scene, removed to some extent from the reality that your eyes beheld while shooting. This is because the digital image is not able to capture in full the quantity and distribution of natural light in the actual scene. In fact, no camera can capture the full tonal details of the actual scene in one exposure.

Light distribution in nature is dynamic, which means that the light falling on any object has different and changing intensities which cannot be faithfully recorded by the camera lens. But we can capture the total range of light, (the tonal details) through any camera in one way : by taking a number of identical pictures of the scene with different shutter speeds, and then merging all of them to make a single image. That single image will encompass the whole range of light at the scene, thereby bringing it close to what the eye sees directly. Thus, the tonal details of a scene cannot be captured in a single exposure. It has to be a multi-exposure and merging job.

The technique by which the entire range of light distribution (or tonal details) of a scene can be captured faithfully in a photograph is known as High Dynamic Range Photography or Imaging (HDR Imaging). Through HDR imaging the photographer captures the actual light distribution in a scene to make it realistic. This merging of images into a single image is done by means of the Photoshop CS2 software. The "merge to HDR" feature of the software brings together a series of exposures of the identical scene into one image containing the tonal details captured in each exposure. Such a "merged" final picture will have the depth and tonal quality of the real scene.

For creating an HDR image, at least 3 exposures will do, though for maximum accuracy, 5 or more exposures are recommended. More the exposures, more the quantum of light that the camera can convert to digital values to enhance the blending of tonal details. The Photoshop CS2 creates a separate HDR file for each image, recording the shutter speed, aperture and ISO setting in each exposure so that the light intensity in them can be assessed (as it may vary from exposure to exposure). The software creates an HDR file by using 32 bits to determine each color channel, instead of the 8 or 16 bits which lie in the Low Density Range.

Though the HDR technique helps us get realistic tonal qualities in photographs, it should be used with great care and skill because overdoing the merging job could distort the image of the scene photographed. There can be no substitute for good lighting, and nothing can come close to the High Density Range of the real scene which the eye naturally perceives. It must also be remembered that improvement of tonal details of a photograph also extracts a price by way of reduction in the contrast among the tonal values. The practice of developing film hasn?t changed that much through the years. The only difference is perhaps the age of digital photography that has allowed individuals to develop this using a printer. This has given hobbyists and others the option of having the developing done in dark room or done at home.

The dark room doesn?t occupy that much space in the studio. It should just be enough to set the equipment and hang the pictures to complete the entire process. Those who find this too difficult can just have this done somewhere else.

A Traditional Film Photographer Finally Gives Digital Photography A Try

Being a rather traditional amateur photographer for the last number of years I have to admit that I wasn?t too thrilled when digital cameras came on the scene. Little did I know it but all of that was soon about to change.

Many of the earlier ones were clunky, sporting poor quality lenses. In general, early on, digital cameras just left a bad taste in my mouth. I initially use them to share pictures of merchandise I selling with other people around the globe.

Although I started to find digital cameras useful I still found them awkward and lacking the precision of a film camera. As time and technology marched on, however, my outlook on digital photography began to change. Digital camera models emerged with greater resolution in the high numbers of megapixels, which was initially unheard of. Needless to say, however, these fine instruments were priced well outside the reach of most any amateur photographer.

Let?s fast-forward to today. High megapixel models can be found for under $300 is absolutely amazing. I haven?t ventured out in purchased one of those models yet. Actually, I?m still toying around with my 1.2 megapixel digital camera that I bought some years ago for right around 500 dollars.

I originally purchased this 1.2 megapixel digital camera to use to take pictures of products I was selling and place those pictures on eBay. It?s very simple to use, and believe me even though it was somewhat cumbersome it was still a lot easier than using a scanner to digitize actual photographs of products taken.

One year while on vacation, I decided to take the digital camera along with my regular photography rig. I found it so convenient, and so easy to use, that I started to find myself getting hooked. I finally took a leap of faith and decided not to be a photography snob and give digital photography a fair shake. Before I knew it I was taking some pretty artistic photographs with my simple digital camera.

What happened next surprised even me. I loaded the files of the digital photos into my computer and then clicked on each one just to get a glimpse of what they look like. Even with my simple 1.2M pixel camera the pictures exploded on the screen, and I was then forever hooked on digital photography.

So if you?ve been fighting the urge to explore digital photography I?d suggest that you get off the fence and give it a try. You?ll be very glad that you did.

One thing that photographers must remember though with framing is that the subject must be the sharper element. * Megapixel - this simply stands for one million pixels. The more pixels that make up a photograph, the higher the resolution and better quality the image will be. So a digital camera that takes a one megapixel image will usually not have anywhere near the image quality of a camera that takes a four or five megapixel image. And the differences become even greater when the photograph is enlarged.

* DPI - this stands for dots per inch and often applies to printers or monitors. For instance, most laser printers have a resolution of around 300 dpi, whereas most monitors display only 72 dpi. Photo quality inkjet printers usually come in at least 1200 dpi.

* Megabyte - this stands for an amount of computer memory that is somewhere around one million bytes of file storage.

* JPEG - this acronym stands for Joint Photographic Experts Group and is now a recognized format for the storage of images is in most digital cameras.The JPEG format allows for quite a bit of image and file compression, making files that are in this format much easier to display on the internet and send to others by e-mail. However, the kind of image compression that is used by the JPEG format can also cause some loss of image quality and so is not suitable for high quality prints.

The tabular black and white film is a new and thinner emulsion film that has more of a surface area and it gives off less depth with high sharpness. Conventional film is the standard type that gives off a superior detail to highlight and was used before the tabular film was introduced in 1988. Orthochromatic film is the best for shots of people and landscapes and gives off a tone that stands above all other film types. Chromogenic film uses dyes and not the silver particles that are used by the other film types. There is no control over the development process and it is more difficult to work with.

There really is no other special equipment or camera that is needed for black and white photography, only the film. When you bring in your roll of film to a store to be developed just let the person behind the counter know what it is. Some places specialize in the development of black and white and it is best to use their services to gain the true feelings you desired to achieve and portray with the photos. Other places develop this type of film, but in return you may not get the true color, or lack of color you desired.

How to Choose Stock Photography for your Web Site

1. Decide where you want to purchase your stock photography. There are large agencies and small independent photographers. While the agencies will have more to chose from and sometimes lower prices an independent photographer will offer more personalized service and opportunities for you to have custom work done, if that is what you need.

2. Dont go in expecting to find an exact image that is in your head, a large agency or an independent photographer will not have the man in a blue suit, holding a cell phone, next to the white blinds nor will they have the beach landscape with the green and white striped chair. You need to have a clear idea in your head of the message that you want to convey and search for an image that creates the message that you want. (If you want something specific youll have to pay for a photography to shoot to your specifications.)

3. Make use of a free comp image to try out the image and make sure that it fits with your project or web design. Most stock agencies offer some sort of free comp image for position only so that you can make sure that you like what youre going to buy. Please use this option, if available, and make sure that the image is going to convey the message that you want it to.

4. Pay for what you need. Dont pay for a 300 dpi image for a web design, and dont buy a 72 dpi image for something you intend to print. Make sure that the agency or independent photographer offers at least a printable and a web version of every photo. Buy only the size image that you need for your job.

5. How much do you want to pay and for how long to you want to use the image? This comes down to royalty free or rights managed. If you dont want the chance of your competitor using the same image or you plan to use the image on or for a product you may want to look at rights managed. This will cost you more but it will lessen the chance of your competitor using the same image. Keep in mind that if youre using the image for an extended period of time you will have to pay for the use of the image every year or so. If you dont feel that your competitor using the same image is a threat or you dont have the money for rights managed photos look into royalty free photography. This product is also great if youre planning to use the images for an extended period of time.

I hope these tips help to get you started in choosing stock photography for your web site, business, or product. Remember to shop around and look for what you need. Also if an agency or photographer doesnt have what you need ask, you may be surprised how helpful they can be even for specific requests.
